The British Museum - Illustrator
£19,427 pa
Fixed-term for 23 months
The Department of Prehistory and Europe cares for a great variety of objects covering a huge span of time from the earliest stone tools to modern times, including prehistoric worked flint, pottery and metalwork, all types of Romano-British, Anglo-Saxon, Viking and Medieval artefacts, later European clocks and watches, ceramics, glass and metalwork.

As Illustrator you will be expected to produce a range of drawings including fine line drawings of the collection’s objects, site drawings, interpretative drawings and colour work. You will also use specialised computer graphics packages to prepare publication and record standard illustrations. You will also be expected to liaise with curators and the image scanning team to provide material from the illustration archives as part of the Museum’s digitisation programme.

Educated to A Level standard or equivalent, you will also have experience of computer vector drawing and graphic packages. Experience of archaeological illustration is a must, as is the ability to work effectively as part of a small team.

Crete - Illustration of Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age ceramics and small finds during fieldwork season
Excavation fieldwork is scheduled to take place at the spectacular site of Karfi, Crete, in August through September 2008, under the direction of Dr Saro Wallace, University of Reading. Expressions of interest are sought among qualified and experienced archaeological illustrators in a 4-5 week period of work based in the attractive village near the site, with high-quality accommodation, food and travel paid by the project. Roman Mancetter - Atherstone Archeological Historical Society
Colin Baddely is seeking an archaeological illustrator to aid with maps and plans for a book covering the work of Keith Scott and Kay Hartley on the first century fortress, the pottery industry and the Burgus on the Watling Street, circa AD300.
